Scottish actor James McAvoy's riveting performance in The Last King of Scotland left American audiences wanting way more of him. And thankfully, we're getting it. He recently costarred with Anne Hathaway in Becoming Jane, and this month, in Atonement, he plays a falsely accused man in 1930s England, alongside Keira Knightley. Early next year, he'll appear in Wanted with Angelina Jolie. All these roles make one thing perfectly clear: James has become the thinking woman's sex symbol.
Had you read Atonement before you did the film? Yes, I absolutely fucking loved it. It's about the power of telling a lie.
You speak French in the movie. Are you actually fluent? No chance! My wife is, so she helped me. We met on the set of the British TV show Shameless a few years ago.
Ever been intimidated by a woman? [My costar in Chronicles of Narnia] Tilda Swinton was quite intimidating initially. She's a huge presence. Also, really posh people are intimidating.
Are you into the Hollywood scene? I'm not interested in free wine and cheese. I would rather not be in an environment where you're using your private life to try to get ahead.
What would you do for aliving if you weren't an actor? I'd be a sword master- the person in a film who coordinates fights. I'd also like to be in mountain rescue.
