James plays Mr. Tumnus, the faun. He is the first 'person' Lucy Pevensie meets when she steps into the magical world of Narnia. He invites her into his house and helps her escape from Narnia, knowing what the witch will do if it is revealed that there is a Daughter of Adam in Narnia. He is a timid and very sensitive faun, who plays a flute and makes a good cup of tea.

During the German air raids of WWII, the four Pevensie children - Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy - are sent out of London to take shelter at the country home of eccentric Prof. Digory Kirke, who happens to be the owner of a curious wardrobe. Peering into this wardrobe one day, Lucy finds herself in the snowy land of Narnia, which is mired in never-ending winter thanks to the magic of the evil White Witch, who has proclaimed that it will be always winter but never Christmas in the mystical land. Eventually the other Pevensies find themselves in Narnia, and the four children learn that they alone are the key to breaking the Witch's eternal winter. But while three of them trudge through the snow with some helpful Beavers to join forces with Aslan, the mighty Lion, the fourth takes a more treacherous path and falls in league with the Witch...

Mr. Tumnus, the Faun: And what about you? You must be some kind of beardless dwarf?
Lucy Pevensie: I'm not a dwarf! I'm a girl. And actually, I'm tallest in my class.
Mr. Tumnus, the Faun: You mean to say that you are a daughter of Eve?
Lucy Pevensie: [confused] My mum's name is Helen...
Mr. Tumnus, the Faun: Yes... but, you are in fact... human?

Mr. Tumnus: [sees Lucy looking at picture] Ah, that... that is my father.
Lucy Pevensie: He has a kind face... he looks a lot like you!
Mr. Tumnus: No... no, I'm not really like him at all.
Lucy Pevensie: My father's fighting in the war...
Mr. Tumnus: My father went away to war too. But that was a long, long time ago...

Mr. Tumnus: [of Aslan] He's not a tame lion.
Lucy Pevensie: No... but he's good.

Mr. Tumnus: Always winter, never Christmas.

Lucy Pevensie: Oh, I should go.
Mr. Tumnus: It's too late for that. I'm such a terrible faun.
Lucy Pevensie: No. You're the nicest faun I've ever met.
Mr. Tumnus: Then I'm afraid you've had a very poor sampling.
Lucy Pevensie: I'm sure you haven't done anything that bad.
Mr. Tumnus: It's not something I have done, Lucy Pevensie. It's something I am doing.
Lucy Pevensie: What are you doing?
Mr. Tumnus: I'm kidnapping you. It was the White Witch. She's the one that makes it always winter, always cold. She gave orders. If anyone was to find a human in the woods, we were supposed to turn it over to her!
Lucy Pevensie: But, Mr. Tumnus, you wouldn't. I thought you were my friend.

James was quite a potty mouth on the set and had to put $2 dollars into a swearing jar that was given to Georgie Henley (Lucy Pevensie).

To achieve those hairy hooves, James donned green tights with red ping pong balls and had to walk as if he were wearing high heels.

Georgie Henley's reaction to Mr. Tumnus at the lamppost is genuine. She had not seen her cast mate James McAvoy in his costume before the scene was filmed, so her screams and reaction were real. Georgie's first reaction to the snowy world of Narnia is also genuine - she was carried into the set blindfolded to make her first entrance, and her wide-eyed, delighted reactions to it all are entirely her own.

James became good friends with everyone on set because the process of filming took so long.
